TBD vs dermoscopy – what is the difference?

A comparison of Total Body Dermoscopy (digital skin mapping) and dermoscopy of individual lesions.

Digital skin map

Dermoscopy – a close look at a specific lesion

Dermoscopy uses a dermatoscope to reveal structures not visible to the naked eye. The clinician examines selected lesions in magnification.

Total Body Dermoscopy (TBD) – digital skin mapping

TBD creates a set of full‑body photographs that serve as a reference for future visits. This makes it easier to spot new lesions and track existing ones.

Side‑by‑side comparison over time

How are the two combined?

In practice, full‑body mapping is paired with dermoscopy of selected lesions. The combination supports safe, consistent monitoring over time.

Who benefits most?

TBD is especially helpful for people with numerous moles, lesions that are hard to evaluate, or those who require regular follow‑up.
