ABCDE – a quick checklist
ABCDE describes features that can be worth checking:
- A for asymmetry – one half differs from the other,
- B for border – uneven, jagged, or blurred edges,
- C for color – multiple shades within one lesion,
- D for diameter – larger than about 6 mm (smaller lesions can still be suspicious),
- E for evolution – rapid change in size, shape, or color.
The “ugly duckling” sign
If one mole clearly looks different from the rest, it is worth asking a clinician to assess it.
Modern evaluation in the clinic
Clinicians use dermoscopy to see structures not visible to the naked eye and may add photographic documentation for follow‑up comparisons.
Remember
ABCDE is guidance, not a diagnosis. If you notice a changing lesion, schedule an evaluation.
