Main subtypes

Commonly described subtypes include:

  • superficial spreading melanoma (SSM),
  • nodular melanoma (NMM),
  • lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM),
  • acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM).

Less common forms include amelanotic and desmoplastic/neurotropic variants.

Why subtype information helps

Subtypes differ in growth dynamics and typical location. This influences clinical suspicion, urgency of management, and interpretation of findings.

Practical note

Final classification is based on combined clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological assessment.
