Clinical overview
Melanoma develops from melanocytes and can progress aggressively if diagnosed late. It may occur on skin and, less commonly, in other locations such as mucosa or the eye.
Why timing matters
Tumor thickness at diagnosis remains one of the most important prognostic factors. Earlier-stage lesions are associated with significantly better outcomes.
Risk context
Higher risk is observed in people with light phototype skin, high UV exposure, numerous atypical nevi, and positive family history.
Diagnostic pathway
Early evaluation relies on clinical exam and dermoscopy. When needed, excision and histopathology confirm the diagnosis and define treatment planning.
